Ideals of Beauty
What is the first thing we think about when we hear ideals of beauty? It isn't strange if we think about super skinny girls or athletic muscular boys. These are some of the main ideals of beauty in our society today, unfortunately more and more youths suffer from long depressions and anxiety. Also things as diseases and anorexia becomes more common which isn't a good thing for our society. The big question is why would a person risk their own health and welfare to achieve the ideals of beauty?
I think that the main cause for this is the stupid media and fashion industry. Our lives today is all about media and fashion that sends signals to us about how we should look, how we should eat and how we should be to fit in the norm that they have "created".
The young ones are the ones who gets the most affected by this because we are all trying to figure out what and who we are as persons. When someone with such bin influence as media tells us how to be you get more easily affected than when your parents say something about fashion or your grandpa. In our everyday life we can see commercials with skinny girls and muscular boys telling you how to lose weight and the fashion industry is embracing "size zero". It is a kind of message that says, this is perfection and of course we accept the fact that this is the way you should be to achieve perfection.
What is perfection actually? Is perfection what media says and manipulate us with or is it who should decide for yourself. Is there even anything that is called perfection? Or are media doing so to sell more products? They make perfection unobtainable so we just get stuck in the products in hope to reach this so called "perfection" that the product promised.
Media and fashion are two very big industries and the create many jobs for us, but is it morally right to make money on peoples low self-esteem? Think in a couple years, when our technology has improved and developed even more, the ideals of beauty will be so scary and I think that no one is ever going to reach that ideal of beauty. Think of all the sick ideals our children will have to grow up with, this is why we have to stand up against media and their unachievable ideals of beauty and make them change it before they destroy more lives.
We have to start accepting ourselves for who and what we are and embrace our flaws instead of hiding them. The things that are called our flaws are what makes us special and unique and that is what makes us beautiful.
